alex ross - a classic spider man poster...His numerous awards include a 1997 Will Eisner Award for the limited series Kingdom Come (with Mark Waid) and a 1998 National Cartoonists Society Comic Book Award for Superman: Peace on Earth
norman rockwell was another mainstream painter in america that was an influence to alex ross.

george perez. alex ross' main influence was perez, and ross wanted to be in the comic industry since he was a child. you can see how the facial expressions of ross' work has been influenced by perez.

alex ross. he painted comic book characters, often superheroes in a classic style. he painted for dc comics and marvel, two of the biggest comic industries. his first completed work for dc comics was of superman. he realistically painted spiderman, the fantastic four, captain america and the x - men and his fans were astonished at the uncanny portrails he made of them.

rembrandt. eakins portraits were often compared to rembrandts because of the sombre use of lighting and the sense of inner truth.

john constable. View on the Stour Near Dedham, 1822. in my opinion i dont think there are many differences in the style of painting between eakins and constable, they both have a very detailed style, they like to paint summer days, they have similar pallette's, the time era is close...the only differences are that constable rarely paints the human figure, he like landscapes alot more.

eakins.

a portrait of Miss Amelia Van Buren. For Eakins, portraiture held little interest as a means of fashionable idealization or even simple verisimilitude--it provided the opportunity to reveal the character of an individual through the modeling of solid anatomical form.[40] This meant that, notwithstanding his youthful optimism, he would never be a commercially successful portrait painter. Few commissions came his way. But his total output of some two hundred and fifty portraits is characterized by "an uncompromising search for the unique human being"

elizabeth with a dog. this is another dark and atmospheric illustration which is more rare of eakins work, as he likes to paint sunlight.

eakins crucifiction is a nice example of how he uses light to reflect off the human form.

thomas eakins attended cental high school in philadelphia where he excelled in mechanical drawing. he later joined the pensylvania academy of the fine arts where he studies drawing and anatomy, then after going to medical college he studied art in eurpoe with jean leon gerome a french artist. some of his first works were a collection of paintings of rowers.

thomas eakins, i looked at eakins work to study his style of painting, he paints alot of people from his hometown of philadelphia. he loved to draw portraits. eakins was one of the most neglected major painters of his era in the united states (1844 - 1916). he also loved to draw the figure in motion, usually nude, and capture the form of the body in the sunlight. i am drawing pictures of the human figure so its interesting to see how he uses light to capture the human form.

dave mckean worked in a limited pallette of colours which i think is very effective in creating an atmospheric mood.

mirrormask was mckeans first film he designed and directed in 2oo5, and was written by gaiman. he won the black tulip award in 2006 for best feature debut film and Youth Jury Award - Special Mention in 2005.

bill Sienkiewicz. this was an artist mckean was often compared to. he worked for dc comics and designed many marvel titles including return of the jedi and the transformers.

after failing to become a comics artist, mckean paired up with neil gaiman, and they wrote a graphic novel called violent cases. he then went on to write and draw the ten issues of cages which was an ambitious graphic novel about artists and creativity. he was influenced by

José Antonio Muñoz and Lorenzo Mattotti

arkham assylum is a famous piece by mckean designed for batman. i have recreated this image as part of my development work.

mr punch, was produced with him and gaiman and explored similar themes as violent cases through the imagery of punch and judy.

dave mckean this is just another example of how he uses a limited pallette to make an effective comic atmosphere.
